Frequently Asked Questions

Are there training opportunities available?

What professional journals and other resources are available through PMI?

Can I earn PDUs by attending chapter meetings? >How do I report PDU's?

PMI Chicagoland monthly dinner meetings give you an opportunity to network and to learn about the best demonstrated practices in project management. AND they also give you a way to earn Professional Development Units (PDUs)!! You can get one PDU for each dinner meeting you attend, but to get credit for these you need to submit them to PMI Headquarters. An easy way to do that is on-line.

How to Submit PDU Credits On-Line

1. To report your PDU, log in at: http://www.occe.ou.edu/pmi/PMI_Member/PDUlogin.php3 and select ‘PMI PDU Self Report Form'

2. Select Category 3 for the 'activity you wish to claim.' Scroll down to Option 3 and enter the Provider ID (C017). Click on the "Get Programs for this Provider" button.

3. Click on the "PMI Component Presentation (One to Two PDU's)" button.

4. On the next screen enter the information as requested and click 'Preview.'

5. On the next page review your submission and if OK, print out a copy for your records before clicking the 'Finalize Submission' button.

How do I renew my membership?

When you renew your membership each year in PMI, don't forget to renew your membership in the Chicagoland Chapter too!! You can accomplish both renewals (and any other chapter, SIG, or College renewals you have also) during the same on-line session. Up to 90 days before your membership expires, when you log on to the Member Area at www.pmi.org you may choose to Renew Membership. During your renewal process, make sure to check for and include your membership in the Chicagoland Chapter and any other chapter, SIG or College memberships you want.

If on the chance you happen to forget to renew your Chicagoland Chapter membership when you renew with PMI, you may add the Chapter membership at any time. Simply log on to the Member Area at www.pmi.org , scroll to the bottom of your Member Information Home page and in the section titled “Components” click on the Add Chapter button. Follow the instructions to select the Chicagoland Chapter.

Please note that your membership year in the Chicagoland Chapter coincides with your membership year in PMI regardless of when you sign up for the Chicagoland Chapter. So to get the most from your membership, remember to renew your chapter membership at the same time as your PMI membership! Back to top

When you joined or renewed your membership in PMI and PMI -Chicagoland, you probably did so using the on-line application process on the PMI website ( www.pmi.org ). From the Member Log On on that site you can access and edit your contact information that was collected at the time of your application. The information shown at this site is the contact information that BOTH PMI -Headquarters and PMI -Chicagoland have for you. On a monthly basis, the membership data that PMI -HQ has for PMI -Chicagoland members is downloaded to PMI -Chicagoland, and that is how we get your contact information. So it is very important that it reflects what you want it to!

You are the only one who can change it – so please make sure it is what you want. Some key items for you to check include:

  • Your Business and/or Home address – to insure PMI -HQ and PMI -Chicagoland have your correct addresses

  • Your Member Preferences: Mailing Address – to insure that PMI mailings and the PMI -Chicagoland Newsletter are mailed to the location you want

  • Your Member Preferences: Excluded From – to indicate your preference as to whether your contact information may be shared in the PMI -Chicagoland Directory On-Line, used for Announcements from PMI and PMI -Chicagoland, or provided to Third Party Mailing Lists

  • And at the very bottom of the page, Components (Chapters, SIGs, Colleges) – to make sure that you have signed up for the PMI -Chicagoland Chapter. Back to top

Get on the PMI -Chicagoland E-Mail Distribution List!

PMI -Chicagoland has its own e-mail distribution list that is separate from the membership database that we receive from PMI Headquarters. We use this distribution list to send e-mails about upcoming events sponsored by the PMI -Chicagoland Chapter. You may select the types of events you would like to be notified about including:

  • The monthly Dinner Meetings

  • PMP Exam Prep Seminars

  • Professional Development Seminars

  • Breakfast Meeting Notices

In addition, you may select to be notified about Speaker Opportunities and Volunteer Opportunities.

So, how do you get on the list? Just go to our home page, www.pmi-chicagoland.org , and scroll to the bottom of the page. Under the section titled “Newsletter & Mailing list” you will see a ‘click here' link to sign up for our mailing list. It's as easy as that! Back to top

It seems that with the advent of the Internet there is more concern than ever about privacy. PMI respects your privacy in a number of ways. For example, you have input to how your contact information may or may not be shared with others. When you sign up for membership, PMI initially assumes that you do NOT want your contact information to be used for the following purposes and therefore EXCLUDES you from:

•  Third Party Mailing Lists •  Directories •  Announcements from PMI

This means that you will not receive mailings from third parties or from PMI which may include announcements about continuing education opportunities. You will not be shown in any printed or on-line directories of PMI members.

But you can choose to be included in any or all of these things if you want.

Go to the www.pmi.org website and do the Member Login. On your Member Information Page you will see a section titled Member Preferences with a subsection that shows what you are being EXCLUDED from. Back to top

After reviewing your Member Preferences, click on the Edit button and the first section you will see concerns your privacy selections. If you are being EXCLUDED from one of the three items listed above, the box next to that item will have a checkmark. If you want be included in that item, click the box to clear the checkmark and your preference will be changed. Since PMI does a monthly update to its membership database, it may take up to two months for you to notice the change depending on when you entered the change in their update cycle. Back to top

Want to find out who else from your company is a member of PMI-Chicagoland? How about follow-up with the person you met at the monthly dinner meeting but you need their phone number? Need to send a document to a fellow member but can't remember their address? You may address these needs by using the Membership Database Search Service on the PMI-Chicagoland website.

To access the Membership Database Search Service, go to the Membership page of our website ( www.pmi-chicagoland.org/membership ). On the right-hand side of the page you will see a section titled “NEED TO CONTACT A MEMBER?” At the login screen, enter your Last Name and PMI Member Number, and then click the login button. The next screen shows 3 boxes titled “First name,” “Last name,” and “Company.” Enter information into these fields and use the logical pull-downs as appropriate to search the PMI-Chicago member database.

The Membership Database is updated once a month via a download from PMI that is then uploaded to the PMI-Chicagoland website. Therefore, depending on when a member makes a change in their contact information or their privacy preferences on the PMI website and when PMI-Chicagoland performs the download/upload procedures, it may take up to 2 months for the change to be effected on the PMI-Chicagoland Membership Database site.

Privacy and the PMI-Chicagoland Membership Database Search Service

Please be aware that only those members who have specified in their PMI Member Preferences that their contact information may be used in directories will appear in this on-line directory. This is to honor the privacy preferences made by our members.

Also note that this directory information is not accessible to anyone who is not a member of the PMI-Chicagoland Chapter, even if they are members of PMI. Sometimes we get requests from PMI members or other individuals wanting to contact a particular PMI-Chicagoland member. Our standard procedure is to contact the PMI-Chicagoland member with the contact information of the requestor and allow our member to decide whether or not to contact the requestor. Again, this is done to protect the privacy of our members.
