Presentation Abstract:

Every project is a system in that resources are used as inputs to meet the project objectives as the output. Further, a project is an open system because its activities are both supported and influenced by its environment. Organizational, financial, legal, and regulatory constraints shape the way a particular project is planned and executed. Yet the project manager has little or no influence on them. The project manager needs to plan the execution so as to achieve the objectives with the available resources, and within the prevailing constraints. Of particular challenge are international projects since the project manager has to interface with multiple organizations, cultures, and legal systems. In such projects the project manager has to plan and coordinate the activities of teams and individuals who are cross-functional, cross-organizational, culturally diverse, geographically dispersed, and subject to various national laws and organizational policies.

Systems mapping is a tool for planning and executing such challenging projects. This technique is derived from the principles of systems thinking. In this presentation you will learn:

  • A model of open-system that represents every segment of reality
  • Guidelines for setting the objectives of a project
  • A model representing a business as an open system
  • A technique for mapping any system
  • Applications of a system map for project management
  • The system map of an actual international project
