Abstract:
During the April Dinner Meeting, our dinner speaker cited that 89% of the Senior Managers surveyed believe the project manager has the necessary organizational authority to manage their assigned project(s) successfully. However, 88% believe they DO NOT have sufficient authority to manage their projects. The May Chapter Dinner Meeting presentation by Helen Cooke, PMP, PMI Fellow, will focus on the project manager’s character and use of power.
Ms. Cooke believes good character, like good quality, is hard to define, but you know when it is missing. Her presentation will outline some of the uses of power in everyday projects, by choosing affiliation, sharing or hoarding knowledge, giving credit or visibility, honoring trust, and even allowing the actions of others to go unacknowledged while others take the limelight or the spotlight.
Throughout her career, our speaker was one of the first women managers in many of her employer organizations. This developed her keen sense of awareness of the effective uses of power. She had to gain the cooperation of a very diverse set of individuals to focus on and deliver results. Some of these experiences will be shared on how she effectively leveraged power to deliver successful projects.
This session will take you through a reassessment of the people who have shaped your view of power, and heighten your awareness of your own behaviors. It will redirect your awareness of how to use and share power to improve your effectiveness.
